Turkey vs US: What is Turkey’s role in Nato? Why has Turkey infuriated the West?

Apart from its strategic location, Turkey is one of five members of Nato’s nuclear sharing policy, alongside the Netherlands, Italy, Belgium and Germany.

The policy means Turkey hosts some 90 nuclear B61 nuclear bombs at its Incirlik Air Base, 40 reserved for use by the Turkish government.

The same airbase also serves as Nato’s port of call for international anti-ISIS operations.

Although Turkey continues to work alongside Nato, its Syria offensive serves as a reminder of developing international tensions.
