Andy Murray drops Australian Open injury hint after European Open quarter-final win

Andy Murray is in his first semi-final since 2017 but has hinted that he may not be fit enough for the Australian Open.

Murray is on a comeback trail after a serious hip injury put doubts over his tennis career.

He beat Copil in three sets on the indoor courts of Antwerp to reach the last four of a tournament for the first time since the French Open in 2017.

Murray is expected to compete in the 2020 Australian Open, according to its tournament director, Craig Tiley.

But the three-time Grand Slam winner has expressed doubts over how he could handle the hard courts in Melbourne.

“It was a tough one to get through,” Murray said.

“I feel okay just now, but it’s more how you pull up the following day.

“The good thing about the indoor matches is that the points are fairly short so doesn’t take as much out of you as the slower courts outside.

“I feel okay, hopefully I pull up well tomorrow.”

Murray had a chance against Romanian qualifier Copil to win in two sets though was broken as he served for the match.

And the Brit acknowledged just how tough it can be to get over the winning line.

“When you get to the end of the match, it’s always difficult to serve it out,” Murray said.

“I played a bad game at 5-3 in the second set and after that, he gained a lot of confidence, served extremely well and was a lot more aggressive.”
