Netflix dropped new series Raising Dion on October 4 with the streaming platform making all nine episodes available at once. The show is proving to be a hit with a 76 percent audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 78 percent from the critics. Express.co.uk spoke exclusively to Raising Dion creator Dennis Liu about the series and the filming process.
Where is Raising Dion set?
Raising Dion is set in contemporary America in a world where people have superpowers.
The show follows single mother Nicole Warren (played by Alisha Wainwright) who has been left bereft by the death of her husband Mark (Michael B. Jordan).
Nicole is looking after her young son Dion (Ja’Siah Young), a challenging task as she tries to balance childcare and work.
An extra layer of complexity is added to the story when Nicole discovers Dion has developed superpowers and there are now people out to get him.

She will be trying to protect her son at all costs as she’s surrounded by danger.
Raising Dion was originally a one-off comic and a short two-minute film with executives at Netflix commissioning a full series after seeing it.
Reflecting on the journey of the series from its humble beginnings to a full-fledged Netflix drama, he said: “Overall, a lot of the idea is the same. What’s most important that was maintained is that we’ve got a great strong female protagonist of colour, a single mom who is African American, who takes care of her son who just so happens to have superpowers. And she needs to figure out why.
“This sort of idea just doesn’t happen in cinema, anywhere in the world. What’s fun is, unlike most superhero movies – Dion’s powers are constantly changing – just like what parents have to deal with when kids are growing up.
“So the show is really a show about parenting disguised as a superhero film!”

Where is Raising Dion filmed?
Raising Dion was filmed in Atlanta Georgia last year over a number of months.
According to the Atlanta Magazine, some of the filming locations included the Chattahoochee Hills in Fairburn and downtown Atlanta, along I-20 at Capitol Avenue.
The site also states a scene was shot at the Fox Theatre in Midtown.
Creator Liu said of filming: “It was challenging in that we had a lot of seven-year-olds and kids who had never acted before.
“They also have very limited hours, as they had to go to school, so we had to be very clever in using their time wisely.
“Simple things like remembering lines and not looking at the camera became such a hard thing to do!
“It was like going to film school again for everyone! Patience was tested for sure some days!”
