Iain MacLeod has spoken out about Gail’s (played by Helen Worth) return on Coronation Street and has revealed the original plans for her comeback were changed. Originally, it would have been a holiday romance but Iain revealed they moved away from that.

Next week will see Gail return to the cobbles, intervening as her granddaughter Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon) faces some backlash for kissing Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard).

Viewers will notice this new Gail after she will share some wise words Bethany, revealing a whole new side to the former receptionist.

Speaking to Digital Spy, Iain was asked about whether Gail had been busy enjoying her holiday romance at Bangkok.

“No. There was originally a story on the table where she did, but we moved away from that in the end, just because we don’t want Gail to get together with another serial killer!” he revealed.

“And if we were going to do it, we’d want to do it on screen rather than off screen.”

Iain continued: ”So no, she hasn’t. She’s just had a zen-like epiphany. But it won’t turn into a pastiche of a hippy lifestyle – she’s still Gail.”

So viewers can expect the same Gail but one who is a “little more grounded and more mother earth“.

Viewers will certainly keep an eye on this new version of Gail as upcoming episode will reveal more about her reformed character.

Gail’s return scenes will air as part of a heartbreaking hour-long episode which will feature Sinead Tinker’s death (Katie McGlynn).

ITV official spoiler pictures released show Gail return to find Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford) and Sally Metcalfe (Sally Dynevor) tear chunks out of a terrified Bethany.

Tracy gives off a frosty reception when she learns Bethany and Daniel shared a kiss even though his wife, Sinead is dying of cancer.

Bethany can be seen staring back at Gail, surprised by her return but also relieved she intervenes.

Gail will unsurprisingly defend Bethany against Sally and Tracy while Sinead is on the brink of death.

Describing the scene, Iain said: “I found the scenes coming up between Gail and Bethany really moving, actually.

“She’s still the Gail we know and love, but there might be a few more harem pants in her wardrobe and a few more coiffure choices.”

Will Gail also be able to patch things up with the rest of her family?

Elsewhere in Weatherfield, will drama unfold for Michelle Connor (Kym Marsh) on her wedding day when she discovers Robert Preston (Tristan Gemmill) is cheating on her?

Michelle will be suspicious of Robert’s whereabouts and will set out to find out what he’s been up to.

Michelle will discover Robert’s double life after doing her own investigations with her cousin Carla (Alison King).

Will Michelle and Robert get married after all?

Coronation Street returns tomorrow at 7.30pm on ITV
