Steph McGovern speaks out on 'eye-opening' pay checks since joining BBC: 'I was surprised'

Steph McGovern, 37, started her broadcasting career with work experience on the BBC’s Tomorrow’s World before going on to be a producer for the financial news segments on the Today programme on BBC Radio 4.

She has worked as a reporter for BBC Breakfast since 2011.

In an unearthed interview from 2016, she spoke out on how being a celebrity had affected her financially.

Asked whether she had ever been paid “silly money per hour” for a job, the presenter told ThisIsMoney.co.uk: “Since becoming a BBC Breakfast presenter I have been paid four-figure sums for doing hour-long speeches for associations and at awards dinners.

“That has been an eye-opener,” Steph admitted.

“I am surprised by how much people are willing to pay TV celebrities to do that kind of stuff.”

She went on to say 2015 was the best year of her life in terms of making money, explaining: “Not because of my BBC salary – that has not changed for several years – but because of al the extra shows I have been doing and the speeches.

“I spent some of the money I made on a holiday to Cuba and used some of it to pay my tax bill early,” she revealed.

“I am so paranoid – I had already pretty much aid my 2015-16 tax bill even before the tax year had ended.”

In addition to her work on BBC Breakfast, Steph is known for presenting Shop Well for Less and Watchdog.

She also regularly contributes to reporting for The One Show.

Elsewhere, Steph is currently taking time off from her role on BBC Breakfast as she awaits the arrival of her first child with her long-term partner.

The presenter prefers to keep her love life private but her girlfriend is thought to be a TV executive.

She confirmed her pregnancy back in July, telling her 378,000 Twitter followers: “I see my news it out!

“Yep, I am no longer with pot belly… I am now with child,” she quipped.

Steph departed BBC Breakfast last month, with her co-stars putting together a sweet farewell video full of messages for the expectant mum.

In the clip, Louise Minchin, 50, said: “Steph, my darling, loads and loads of luck.

“It will be absolutely the best thing you’ve ever done in your whole life and the most brilliant thing, from our point of view, is that I know that you will become a loyal BBC Breakfast viewers because, at 6am, it’s just us to talk to!”

According to The Sun, Steph told family and friends she is due to give birth in November.

Watchdog airs Thursdays at 8pm on BBC One.
