Windows 10 fans dealt disappointing blow after Microsoft’s mega Surface event

Microsoft didn’t hold back with its Surface event yesterday. The firm announced the Surface Laptop 3, Surface Pro 7, Surface Pro X, Surface Earbuds and new folding devices called the Surface Neo and Surface Duo.

But there was one notable omission from proceedings, that wasn’t any discussion of the next version of Windows 10, codenamed 19H2.

It was initially thought Microsoft could announce the release of 19H2 during its feverishly anticipated showcase in the Big Apple for two reasons.

Firstly, the Redmond-based firm held another Surface event on the same date, October 2, last year and announced the launch of the aptly titled October 2018 Update. The software started its gradual rollout to users the very same day.

Secondly, Microsoft has continued to release preview builds of 19H2 to its loyal Insiders. As more preview versions have released, the number of improvements and alterations in each has dwindled.

For instance, Microsoft’s latest preview build for 19H2 that released on September 25 only featured a small number of general and quality improvements for users.

The lack of changes in recent versions of 19H2 suggested the software was nearing a complete state. Therefore, many Microsoft fans were hoping the new update would debut in full yesterday.

Sadly, it wasn’t meant to be. Meaning it’s still unclear when Microsoft could launch its next upgrade for Windows 10 fans.

Windows 10 version 19H2 is certainly more of an iterative update for the popular operating system than a substantial overhaul.

In fact, Microsoft has already admitted the new software will be focused primarily on delivering a “scoped set of features for select performance improvements, enterprise features, and quality enhancements”.

With that said, 19H2 should improve the battery life and overall efficiency of some PCs – something that will surely be a welcome addition for users treated to the upgrade.

A number of other notable changes in Microsoft’s newest software come to Windows Shell, the graphical interface that makes Windows 10 distinct.

With 19H2, users are able to add events to their calendar simply by using the app’s fly-out menu, rather than being forced to open it entirely.

Meanwhile, File Explorer now allows users to quickly sort through items stored locally and in the cloud.

Finally, the new Microsoft operating system should also exterminate a number of bugs that have manifested themselves in the current May 2019 Update.

While it’s still unclear when 19H2 will launch in full, Express.co.uk will be on hand to bring you all the latest news about the update ahead of its release.
