The Matrix 4: Keanu Reeves warns fans in bombshell about ‘ambitious’ script

The sci-fi original was a runaway hit in the 1990s, prompting serious questions about life and reality. It also cemented Keanu, who plays Neo in the original trilogy and is set to reprise his role in the fourth instalment, as a firm action star in Hollywood. And Neo and Trinity’s (played by Carrie Ann Moss) crackling romance made the series a cult classic, so fans were thrilled when it was announced last month the Wachowski sisters are returning for the next film. But hot off the heels of the news, John Wick star Reeves revealed the new project will have some steep hopes.

In a new interview, 55-year-old actor kept quiet about the exact plot of The Matrix 4.

The star simply said he was “absolutely excited” for his character’s storyline.

Long-time fans will remember it appeared Neo died in The Matrix Revolutions, so the film will have to address his return straight away.

How much time has passed since Neo and Trinity’s last appearances? Has the Matrix adapted to technology even more?

Despite keeping his lips sealed over the plot to come, Reeves couldn’t resist warning fans about the nature of the script.

He told Entertainment Tonight: “It’s very ambitious.

“As it should be!” the star added with a laugh.

The franchise’s co-creator, Lana Wachowski – who created the universe with her sister Lilly Wachowski – is set to write, direct and produce the film.

She said in a statement: “Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now.

“I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”

Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman, Toby Emmerich, then added: “Lana is a true visionary – a singular and original creative filmmaker.

“We are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter.”

The Matrix was released in 1999, with the sequel The Matrix Reloaded following in 2003.

The Matrix Revolutions was also released in the same year.

One of the major questions on everyone’s lips is whether Morpheus star Laurence Fishburne will also be back.

Fans will remember he died in the sequel, but could he also be resurrected? Other reports have suggested the production will cast a younger actor to play the character.

The Matrix 4 is expected to begin production next year.
