ATP roundup: Garin opens with upset at Chengdu Open

Chile’s Cristian Garin upset seventh-seeded Kyle Edmund of Great Britain 6-3, 6-2 in the first round of the Chengdu (China) Open on Monday.

Garin, ranked 33rd in the world, broke Edmund’s serve twice in each set to cruise to victory in 1 hour, 13 minutes.

“I think it’s my best match this year on hard court for sure,” said Garin, who won clay-court titles in Munich and Houston earlier this year.

Britain’s Daniel Evans was pushed to a third-set tiebreaker before defeating China’s Yan Bai 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (4). American qualifier Bradley Klahn beat Taiwanese qualifier Jason Jung 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (2).

Ramos-Vinolas won 81 percent of his first-serve points and never faced a break point. Britain’s Cameron Norrie also did not face a break point in dispatching Germany’s Peter Gojowczyk 6-1, 6-4.

Adrian Mannarino of France advanced with a 7-6, 7-5 victory over Ze Zhang of China, while China’s Di Wu eliminated Japan’s Tatsuma Ito 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Former world No. 1 Andy Murray of Great Britain, continuing his comeback from January hip surgery, opens play Tuesday against the United States’ Tennys Sandgren.
