Mason Mount plots Liverpool comeback as Chelsea ace undergoes intensive injury treatment

Mason Mount has not given up his chances of playing in Chelsea’s crunch Premier League clash with Liverpool, in a major boost for the Stamford Bridge club.

England star Mount, 20, limped out of Chelsea’s 1-0 Champions League defeat by Valencia on Tuesday after a crude tackle by Francis Coquelin.

There were fears the Chelsea youngster had damaged ligaments, which would have kept him out for weeks, but scans on Wednesday revealed only a sprained ankle – and Mount is now being treated intensively in a bid to get him fit for Sunday’s clash.

Mount, who has scored three goals in five league games this season and been one of manager Frank Lampard’s brightest stars, began his rehabilitation on Wednesday.

Chelsea’s loss to Valencia – which saw Ross Barkley miss a penalty three minutes from time – means that they have still to win a home game this season under Lampard.

But Barkley is adamant that the lack of home wins is not preying on Chelsea minds.

The England midfielder said: “It’s a weird anomaly. But we are going to win home games.

“We haven’t won one yet but there’s a big game coming up. Hopefully we win that and start winning.

“We’re joint-third. We’re not doing badly. We’ve got a confident bunch of lads. The big games bring the best out of all players.

“We played well in the Super Cup final against Liverpool and we can perform to those levels again on Sunday.”.

And Barkley insisted that it is his job to take Chelsea’s penalties, and he will carry on taking them.

Barkley had words with first Jorginho and then Willian, who both wanted to take the kick on Tuesday night – but the England man had grabbed the ball.

Lampard afterwards insisted that Barkley is the regular penalty taker, and that when on the pitch he will take the spot kicks.

Barkley insisted: “When I’m on the pitch, I’ll take the penalty. Obviously I didn’t execute it right but everybody misses penalties.

“The players were encouraging me to score. Obviously they felt confident as well – but I practice every day. They would have been willing to take the penalty – but I felt confident.

“On a sheet in the changing rooms it says I’m on penalties if I’m on the pitch. Otherwise, its Jorginho. I don’t miss them in training and in pre-season I scored penalties. If there had been another penalty in the game, I would have been confident to take it.”

Chelsea meanwhile have opened talks with two of their young players, striker Tammy Abraham and defender Fikayo Tomori, about new five-year deals.
