Waitrose food recall: Supermarket issues urgent warning over serious health risk

Waitrose are recalling their Sour Cream and Chive Mix as an ingredient, which wasn’t mentioned on the label has been discovered in it. The product contains wheat, which wasn’t declared on the packaging, meaning it is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten. The item in question is the 150g Sour Cream and Chive Mix, and customers are being asked to look out for items with the best before date code of 21 December 2019. At present, no other Waitrose items are known to be affected. The Foods Standard Agency released a statement explaining the action Waitrose are taking to protect their customers.

It read: “Waitrose is recalling the above product from customers and has contacted the relevant allergy support organisations, which will tell their members about the recall.

“The company has also issued a point-of-sale notice to its customers. These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product.”

Any customers who have an allergy to wheat must not eat the product, but instead return it to a local branch where they’ll receive a full refund.

“We apologise that it has been necessary to recall this product and for the inconvenience caused,” Waitrose wrote.

For any further information, customers have been advised to contact Waitrose’s Customer Care line on: 0800 188 881 and select option 4.

The FSA added: “Sometimes there will be a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold. Then it might be ‘withdrawn’ (taken off the shelves) or ‘recalled’ (when customers are asked to return the product).

“Sometimes foods have to be withdrawn or recalled if there is a risk to consumers because the allergy labelling is missing or incorrect or if there is any other food allergy risk. When there is a food allergy risk, the FSA will issue an Allergy Alert.”
