Xperia 5 release – Sony's striking new Android phone packs big features at a lower price

Sony is back with a new Android device called the Xperia 5.

The latest smartphone has just been unveiled at the IFA technology show and will lineup in the range between the Xperia 1 and Xperia 10.

That means it still gets some pretty impressive flagship specs but will arrive in pockets at a much cheaper price.

In fact, it’s though the Xperia 5 will cost around £699 which is considerably cheaper that the top-end Xperia 1.

So what do you get for your money?

The Xperia 5 arrives with some decent specs including a 6.1-inch Full HD+ OLED display which continues to offer 21:9 CinemaWide viewing and Sony’s award-winning BRAVIA TV technologies with X1 for mobile engine.

This means user can watch content in full HDR (High Dynamic Range) quality which improves the contrast, colour and clarity of what’s on the screen.

As well as that impressive display there’s also some good news coming to the rear of this device with it getting a triple rear camera.

This trio of lenses brings an improved zoom plus there’s the option to shoot images with the wide-angle lens.

Night shots should also be much brighter with Sony featuring a F1.6 lens, large 1.4μm pixel pitch and Dual Photo Diode image sensor.

Sony is also boasting that its eye-tracking autofocus that was introduced on the Xperia 1 has now been improved.

The Japanese firm says that the Xperia 5 takes this technology one step further with improved camera enhancements from Sony’s Alpha cameras.

With Xperia 5 you’re able to track the action with continuous burst shooting at up to 10 fps AF/AE tracking (Auto Focus and Auto Exposure) and the device also has increased AF/AE calculations at up to 30fps allowing you to capture moving subjects with precision focus.

And new for Xperia 5 is a ‘Photography advice’ setting.

This helps prevent photographic disasters, such as your finger in front of the camera lens or someone with their eyes closed.

Other extras coming to this phone include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, 3140mAh fast charging battery and Stereo speakers.

“With Xperia 5 we’ve brought what our customers loved from Xperia 1 into a smaller design with the latest award-winning technology from Sony,” said Mitsuya Kishida, President, Sony Mobile Communications. “Xperia 5 continues to bring uncompromised performance and leading experiences to a smartphone, only possible with Sony.”

It will arrive in three colours ships with Android 9 Pie and is available in the UK from Friday, 4th October 2019.

Xperia 5 is available to pre-order from Wednesday, 18th September, with selected retailers giving customers the opportunity to redeem the award-winning and industry-leading WF-1000XM3 truly wireless Noise Cancelling headphones to pair with their new handset.
