Downton Abbey film location: Where is Downton Abbey filmed? Can I visit the set?

Downton Abbey is back but this time in cinemas as the feature film is about to make its debut. The TV series was filmed all over the UK and the film is no different. Here is everything we know about filming locations for the movie.

Where is Downton Abbey filmed?

The outside of the house itself is in fact Highclere Castle, a 5,000 acre estate in Hampshire, England.

Rather than being occupied by the Earl of Grantham, it is the country seat of the Earl of Carnarvon.

The house was opened in 1842 and architect Charles Barry designed it inspired by Jacobethan style, which the park designed by Capability Brown.

As well as the house itself, the village of Lacock in Wiltshire is used for many outdoor village scenes.

The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book, and it is full of listed buildings and structures, and now most of the village is owned by the National Trust.

Harewood House in West Yorkshire is used as the residence of Princess Mary, daughter of King George V and Queen Mary, who go to visit the Crawley family.

As well as this, a great ball is thrown, which was filmed at Wentworth Woodhouse in Wentworth, South Yorkshire.

According to IMDB, other locations used in the film include Beamish Open Air Museum in Beamish, County Durham and North Yorkshire Moors Railway in Pickering, North Yorkshire.

Can I visit the locations from Downton Abbey?

Yes, most of the locations from Downton Abbey are open to visit.

But the locations have different opening times so it’s best to check their websites.

Highclere Castle is only open during summer months in 2019, and reopens for Christmas in late November and December.

Lacock village is open all the time, with certain venues open at particular times.

Beamish Open Air Museum is open daily until the beginning of November this year, while the National Yorkshire Moors Railway is open with multiple trips every day.

Wentworth Woodhouse is open from Tuesday to Sunday, with some planned closures, and Harewood House is open most days.
