Harry Redknapp: ‘It’s frightening’ The Lateish Show guest, 72, addresses ‘crazy’ change

Harry Redknapp has opened up about the footballing world, after starting out as a player for the likes of West Ham and Bournemouth before moving into management. However, the I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! 2018 winner has said the wages in the sport are now “crazy”. The 72-year-old admitted he’d “love to play now” as he poked fun at what some of the stars earn nowadays. Appearing on the latest instalment of The Lateish Show, he also addressed his nephew Frank Lampard moving to Chelsea and him missing the beautiful game.

“Of course I miss the Premiership,” Harry started. “I left school at 14, went into football and up until a year ago I’ve never been out.

“It was my life really. I still watch every game on TV.”

Host and comic Mo Gilligan asked: “Your nephew is Frank Lampard, who’s now managing Chelsea. Have you given him any advice? It’s a big job.”

“Nah,” the father of Jamie Redknapp confirmed. “Listen, Frank was a great footballer wasn’t he? What a fantastic player. He’s done everything there is to do in the game as a player.

“He knows what he’s doing, he’ll be fine. But it’s about good players Mo, you need good players.”

Harry went on: “The most important thing to be a successful manager is good players. Without good players you’ve got no chance. I don’t care who you are.”

Talk then turned to players now, with the father-of-two remarking: “I’d love to play now, the wages are incredible now!

“If you can tie your boots up, you get £100,000 a week. He looks good in the kit, we’ll pay him £150,000 a week. It’s frightening, the wages have gone crazy.”

Harry was joined on the chat show by fellow I’m A Celebrity winner Scarlett Moffatt as well as Katherine Ryan and Tom Davis.

He remarked on his time in the jungle: “I kept thinking I’d be home tomorrow, I’d be out of it, cop the money, I’m gone.

“But no, 21 days later, I’m still in there. Get me out of there, I thought that was the idea of it!”

Harry didn’t now until the finale, which saw him triumph, that Scarlett had also taken part in the show.

The 29-year-old won back in 2016, after beating Joel Dommett and Adam Thomas at the end, and went on to host spin off Extra Camp.

Scarlett said: “He just thought I was there at the end of the bridge waving hi!”

Harry replied: “Did you have to go back and give out the trophy to the next winner?” before she told him she had even handed it to him.

The Lateish Show continues tonight at 10pm on Channel 4.
