Tesla Model 3 car explodes after ‘autopilot failure’ as father and children escape – video

The Tesla Model 3 crashed on a ring road outside Moscow in Russia on August 10, according to reports. Driver, Alexey Tretiyakov, and his two children escaped the vehicle before it was engulfed in flames. According to Russian outlet Zvezda, police believe the car was on autopilot at the time and didn’t slow down before hitting a broken down tow truck.

Police said: “The Tesla was probably driving on Autopilot and couldn’t recognize the tow truck in front of it, after which it caught fire.”

Mr Tretiyakov reportedly suffered a concussion and a leg fracture, while the children suffered cervical spine and chest injuries.

He said: “I was going along Moscow Ring road in the left lane with a speed of 100kph (62mph) and did not notice a parked GAZelle tow truck.

“My Tesla Model 3 hit the tow truck with its left side and caught fire.

“It was not on full-scale automatic control – in Model 3 there is the function ‘driver’s assistant’ only, so I was holding the wheel.”

He said all three passengers were wearing seat belts, adding: “I needed help to get out of my car because one of my legs was broken.”

However, Tesla have said drivers should keep their hands on the wheel in case of emergencies.

Their website states: “Current Autopilot features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous.”

The shocking video comes after previous crashes involving cars with autopilot.

In 2018, a woman in Arizona was killed after a fully-driverless car hit her late at night.

Elaine Herzberg, 49, was pushing her bike over a pedestrian crossing when she was hit by Volvo XC90 SUV.

She is the first person to be killed by an autonomous vehicle.
