Steph McGovern: ‘That’s s**t’ BBC Breakfast star wishes colleague ‘speedy recovery’

Steph McGovern, 37, sent well wishes to BBC Radio Gloucestershire News Editor, Carly Appleby, on Twitter.

Carly gave her 1,744 followers an update on her battle with cancer, where she revealed she had undergone a oophorectomy, which removes a surgical procedure to remove one or two ovaries.

The BBC star, who has previously worked for BBC News and BBC 5 Live, wrote on Twitter: “Spending the night @gloshospitals after my #oopherectomy been here for 12 hours.

“I was first on the list this morning but had some complications. Feeling a little sorry for myself. The nurses are so wonderful. #breastcancer.”

Steph sent her support to Carly and replied back to her post: “That sounds s**t. Hope you have a speedy recovery. Xx.”

Carly, who was 37-years-old when she was diagnosed with stage three cancer, told her followers she was having an assessment for the procedure at the end of July.

She wrote: “Waiting for my pre-assessment @gloshospitals for my #oophorectomy hoping they get blood first time.

“I’m having this op as my breast cancer was strongly oestrogen positive & it means no more zoladex injections for ten years. #lifeafterbreastcancer #checkyourboobs @YBCN_UK.”

Meanwhile, Steph, who is pregnant with her first child with her girlfriend, recently gave fans an insight into how she started her career.

The expectant mum-to-be shared how important vocational education is to her, in a post on Twitter.

Steph announced she had created a day for young people to celebrate achieving vocational qualifications.

She penned: “Nearly time for my annual celebration of people completing vocational quals.

“Next Wed 14th Aug people who’ve done BTECs, City&Guilds, NVQs, Cambridge Technicals etc will be on BBC News (like A-Level results day). Here’s why I created this day last year,” with a link to her blog post which highlighted the main issues.”

In response to her tweet, one person said how “hands on experience” shouldn’t be “dismissed”.

Steph replied, revealing her own background: “Ooh interesting. I did a Year In Industry too. Made all the difference. Wouldn’t be where I am without it. Great to hear your son’s story too.”

The pregnant star also revealed another insight into her career, as she told her fans she regularly spends time at farms as part of her jon.

Steph used the hashtag #Farm24, which is a campaign to highlight the work agricultural workers do, to post pictures of herself on farms.

She captioned the pictures: “I visit lots of farms as part of my job.

“So I just want to give a shout out to all the hardworking farmers running them. #Farm24.”

BBC Breakfast airs on BBC One from 6am.
