What Jurgen Klopp needs for Liverpool to challenge Man City this season – JERMAINE JENAS

Former England midfielder Jermaine Jenas expects last season’s top two to occupy the Premier League summit again in 2019-20 – but he fears Anfield messiah Klopp has not supplemented his squad enough in the transfer window to change the pecking order.

Jenas said: “I can’t see past Manchester City for the title, and the only team who look capable of pushing them – as was the case last season – is Liverpool.

“But to go past City, you have to strengthen, and I’m not sure Liverpool have done enough in the market this summer to overtake them.

“Having said that, Adam Lallana is back, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is back and that will give them extra dimensions in midfield.

“And when you have arguably the best front three in Europe already – Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane – it’s hard to improve that area of the team.

“Although City only beat them to the title by a single point, I felt there was more to come from that front three, more to give. Do they have another gear to find?”

Jenas believes City and Liverpool’s freakish stockpile of points last season – they won 195 out of a possible 228 between them – will not be repeated.

He added: “The numbers last season were ridiculous, but I don’t see City and Liverpool needing 100 points to win the title this time.

“I suspect the likes of Leicester, Everton and Wolves will take enough points off the top six to make the table more compact.”

Jermaine Jenas has joined Express Sport as a columnist for the season.
