Andy Murray confirms singles return next week at Cincinnati Masters and could play US Open

The Scot, 32, has not competed in singles since losing in the first round of the Australian Open and he feared his career was over before undergoing hip resurfacing surgery in January.

The former world No 1 has played five events in doubles this summer,  including mixed doubles at Wimbledon with Serena Williams.

Now Murray has decided to accept a wildcard singles at the Western & Southern Open which starts Sunday night. And if he comes through the tournament, he will be set to play the final Grand Slam event of the season starting in New York starting on August 26.

The double Olympic champion announced the news on his Facebook page along with a photo of him fist pumping and the caption: “That feeling when you accept a wildcard for the singles in Cinci… #LetsDoThis #HereWeGo”

Murray has eased himself back to match fitness by competing in doubles events.

The three-time Grand Slam champion won the Queen’s Club title alongside Feliciano Lopez on his return in June.

However, he lost in the first round at Eastbourne the following week while partnering Marcelo Melo.

Wimbledon was Murray’s first Grand Slam back following the successful surgery had him installed with a metal hip.

But he and Pierre-Hugues Herbert struggled in the men’s doubles draw, losing in the second round.

Murray had much better fortune in the mixed doubles as he teamed up with 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams.

The blockbuster pair drew crowds rarely seen in mixed doubles events and they reached the third round before going out against the top seeds.

The Washington and Canadian Opens both ended with second-round defeats.

But Murray feels he is now ready to do all the running himself and will return at the Cincinnati Masters.

However, the 32-year-old will not be seeded so will be hoping to avoid many of the top players competing in the draw.

Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic could all meet Murray in the first round.
