Is The American in Stranger Things not Hopper?

In the middle of the credits of the Stranger Things finale, the show cuts to a secret base in Kamchatka, Russia.

At the base, Russian guards are speaking about which prisoner should be sacrificed to the Demogorgon they have imprisoned.

One of the officials says to the other “No, not the American,” which has led fans to speculate on who this could possibly be.

The major theories so far about who The American is have pointed to either Brennan (Matthew Modine) or Hopper (David Harbour).

This is because Brennan was revealed to be still alive in season two as well as the creators of the show – the Duffer brothers – hinting he could be coming back.

Hopper, on the other hand, was last seen disappearing in the explosion caused by the closing of the gate to the Upside Down.

However, there has been no official confirmation about who the character actually is in the show.

Brett Gelman, who plays Murray Bauman in the sci-fi series, recently spoke to Men’s Health about the dramatic cliffhanger.

He told the publication when asked about who is could be: “I think it’s JFK.

“I really don’t know. I really don’t know. I have no idea. It could be a villain, it could be a hero. I have no idea.

“Maybe they’re setting up a whole new character for season four.”

One of the reasons fans have been so keen to assume the American was Hopper was due to an Easter Egg in the show.

Murray’s phone number was planted in the series and when fans called it, there was a pre-recorded voicemail.

In the message, Murray says: “If this is Joyce, Joyce, thank you for calling, I have been trying to reach you. I have an update. It’s about, well, it’s probably best if we speak in person.”

Some fans took this to imply Hopper could actually still be alive and Murray has some information.

When Men’s Health asked about the message, Gelman was coy and replied: “All I can say is that the Duffers wrote that, and they were like will you do this? And, they didn’t really tell me what it means.”

He was pushed on whether he would be surprised if it was about Hopper, he added: “I would be! I would be terribly surprised.”

He added: “Everything about this show is surprising, so regardless of whatever that means, it’s going to be a huge shock to me. I don’t know.”

The Duffer brothers have also been keeping quiet about what could happen in a potential season four of the show.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ross Duffer said: “Assuming there’s a season four, obviously the question of who that American is in that cell and then also what they’re doing with the Demogorgon, is a tease.

“That’s obviously going to play a huge role in a potential season four.”

Stranger Things season 3 is available on Netflix now.
