Rafael Nadal opens up on his two priorities amid pursuit of Roger Federer record

Nadal has won 18 major titles, 82 career trophies and has earned more than $110million in prize money.

And despite being one of the most recognisable sportsmen in the world, the Spaniard is happy to live a quiet life.

The 33-year-old is just two Grand Slam behind Roger Federer’s all-time record of 20.

But his desire to surpass Federer is outweighed by a need to be happy and healthy.

And Nadal feels that if those two things are in place, his chances of overtaking Federer will be improved.

“My goal is just to be happy,” he told the ATP.

“I’ve achieved much more than I ever dreamed as I’ve said a lot of time already.

“That’s my real goal honestly. Stay healthy and if I’m healthy normally I enjoy playing tennis.

“And if I am able to combine these two things then normally I have my chances to fight for the most important things.

“So my goal is to play what I like to play.

“Play as good as possible and as long as possible and then we’ll see in terms of results how far I am able to go.”

He added: “For everybody, it is important.

“But it is something I am not obsessed about. I’m just happy about the way I did.

“Of course I would love to have more than him but honestly it is not my approach with this stuff.

“If it happens, fantastic. But my point of view is to keep producing chances to be competitive in the most important events and maybe I am able to win a couple more.”
