As Newsweek reported the European parties to the agreement – the EU, Britain, France and Germany have attempted to bypass sanctions sanctions on Iran reimposed by the US, which include a ban on accessing the American financial system and trading with the US dollar.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said the blacklisting of Mr Zarif was an act of “desperation, exhaustion and weakness” that “marked the end of the era of American superpower and its adventurism in the region”.
The EU rejected the decision with a spokesman for Federica Mogherini, the Foreign Affairs representative saying: “We regret this decision.”
Carlos Martin added: “From our side, we will continue to work with Mr Zarif as Iran’s most senior diplomat and in view of the importance of maintaining diplomatic channels.”
Mr Zarif, who was Iran’s chief negotiator in the nuclear deal talks, may still be given visas to allow him to take part in diplomatic meetings on US soil but the last such meeting was allowed under heavy restrictions.
The former Iranian representative to the UN tweeted in response to the sanctions: “Is the truth really that painful?
“It has no effect on me or my family, as I have no property or interests outside of Iran.
“Thank you for considering me such a huge threat to your agenda.”
