Donald Trump MOCKS burglary of US Congressman after a week of verbal attacks – ‘Too bad!’

Mr Cummings’ home in Baltimore was burgled last week just hours before Trump told Fox News the Congressman was a “brutal bully”. The US President also went on to say that Mr Cummings’ district of Baltimore was a “disgusting, rat and rodent-infested mess”. After Baltimore police released an incident report on the break-in, Trump tweeted: “Really bad news! The Baltimore house of Elijah Cummings was robbed. Too bad!”

The tweet has resulted in criticism from many including Trump supporters.

Former ambassador of the UN Nikki Haley – who is a Trump ally – responded to Trump’s tweet by writing “this is so unnecessary” with an eyeball emoji.

However, White House adviser Kellyanne Conway struck back at Ms Haley by claiming her message was “unnecessary”.

Other Republicans also criticised Trump’s response including Illinois congressman Adam Kinzinger who said the tweet was “so beneath the office you hold”.

Mr Kinzinger tweeted: “It’s childish, and yet it’s getting really old.”

Mr Cummings has not responded to the tweet but has confirmed in a statement that the burglar did not gain access into his home.

He said: “I was notified of the intrusion by my security system, and I scared the intruder away by yelling before the person gained entry into the residential portion of the house.

”I thank the Baltimore Police Department for their response and ask that all further inquiries be directed to them.”

Trump has maintained that his tweet was not meant to make him sound like a “wise guy”.

On the White House lawn he said: “The tweet itself was really just really a repeat of what I heard on the news.

“I know his house was robbed and I thought that was too bad. That was really not meant as a wise guy tweet.”

When questioned about Ms Haley’s tweet he said: “Well, that’s OK. I don’t mind that.”

Ms Haley left her post as the President’s first ambassador October last year and defended Trump’s remarks about Baltimore earlier this week.
