Mohammad Javad Zarif has been noted for some fiery rhetoric in the diplomatic spat between the two nations. Now, the Treasury in Washington has confirmed Mr Javad Zarif has had sanctions imposed on him. Steven Mnuchin, Treasury Secretary, said in a statement: “Javad Zarif implements the reckless agenda of Iran’s Supreme Leader, and is the regime’s primary spokesperson around the world.”
Mr Zarif brushed off the recent developments, adding: “It has no effect on me or my family, as I have no property or interest outside of Iran.”
A spokesman for his department, Abbas Mousavi said: “The peak of stupidity and inconsistency of America’s leaders is at a point where they don’t recognise Dr Zarif as being influential in Iran’s policy but with the ultimate ignorance they sanction him! The Americans have a strong fear of the logic of Dr Zarif and his negotiating skills.”
Al Jazeera journalist Dorsa Jabari questioned whether the US understood how Iran’s government works, she said: “The idea that by sanctioning the foreign minister, that they will get to deal with a more powerful person in the system to talk to is really absurd.”
The US may still give Mr Zarif a visa to allow him to attend international meetings on a case by case basis.
On Monday, Mike Pompeo, Mr Zarif’s counterpart in Washington tweeted: “We aren’t afraid of Zarif coming to America where he enjoys the right to speak freely. Are the facts of the Khamenei regime so bad he cannot let me do the same thing in Tehran?
“What if his people heard the truth, unfiltered, unabridged?”
Washington has already placed sanctions on supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and those working within his office.
He is the ultimate political and religious authority in Iran.
The incumbent succeeded the founder of Iran’s current Islamic Republic Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
Mr Khomeini was known for referring to the United States as “The Great Satan”.
Mr Pompeo has tweeted on recent developments writing: Recently, President Donald Trump sanctioned Iran’s Supreme Leader, who enriched himself at the expense of the Iranian people. Today, the U.S. designated his chief apologist Javid Zarif. He’s just as complicit in the regime’s outlaw behaviour as the rest of Khamenei’s mafia.”
