iPad upgrade – Apple's unmatched tablet could be set for more changes this year

It seems Apple could be set to expand its iPad lineup.

The tech giant recently filed regulatory entries for two new models of the esteemed tablet with the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC).

Referred to by model codes A2200 and A2232, the documents were spotted by AppleInsider.

The outlet speculated the hardware in question could be an upgrade to the current sixth-generation iPad that launched back in March of 2018.

The iPad in question is positioned as Apple’s most affordable tablet, starting from £319.

Earlier this year renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo issued a report claiming Apple will increase the screen size of its entry-level iPad to 10.2-inches.

For reference, the iPad sixth-generation boasts a 9.7-inch LED panel.

Apple Insider previously speculated the increased screen real estate could suggest the hardware may follow the trend set by the iPad Pro last year by reducing bezels in favour of a more contemporary aesthetic.

However, the outlet noted the hardware is still likely to rely on Touch ID as its primary method of unlocking.

It is worth noting neither of these claims have been officially confirmed.

Tipster CoinX on Twitter speculated back in March Apple could also be planning to release a new 10.5-inch iPad that is a non-Pro model.

While rumours surrounding Apple’s iPad continue to circulate, it is worth noting the company has not officially confirmed any forthcoming news about its tablet series.

The tech giant has already updated its iPad Air and iPad mini this year – both devices were handed a fresh set of internals to help them deliver rapid performance for owners.

Most recently Apple announced its tablets will soon cease to run iOS in favour of a new operating system aptly named iPadOS.

Discussed at the firm’s recent Worldwide Developers Conference, the software attempts to cater to the iPad’s form factor with an improved home screen, more intuitive multitasking and a refined Files app.

Apple has confirmed iPadOS will launch later this year as a free update for a wealth of its tablets old and new.
