Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp reveals real reason why Reds have only made one summer signing

Liverpool didn’t come into the summer break expecting to be very active in the transfer window as they have focused on tying down players to new contracts, however, there are concerns they could be left behind as the rivals strengthen their squads.

The Reds are coming off a fantastic season that saw them take Manchester City down to the last game of the season before losing out by a single point and then finished their campaign with a 2-0 win over Tottenham in the Champions League final.

Jurgen Klopp secured his first trophy during his reign at Anfield, after having previously lost his three previous finals, as Liverpool secured their sixth European Cup.

However, the 52-year-old revealed that although Liverpool are a wealthy club, they can’t compete with the spending power some clubs are displaying at the moment.

“It’s not easy,” Klopp told the Liverpool Echo.

“I said last year that to improve the team is not easy with reasonable money.

“With crazy money, you always can do it – okay, you pay whatever you want, then it’s possible.

“We are not a club like that. We cannot do that.

“We are really wealthy but we cannot do what some other teams are doing. That’s how it is.”

Liverpool have released several players this summer, including previous first-team stars Alberto Moreno and Daniel Sturridge, among those deemed surplus to requirements at the club.

As far as recruitment Liverpool have managed to bring in Dutch youngster Sepp van den Berg from PEC Zwolle.

The 17-year-old joined for a reported £1.3million that could rise to £4.3m and despite his age Klopp feels the youngster can compete for a place in the first-team.

As for other transfers Klopp doesn’t feel the club needs to replicate the heavy spending they have shown in previous seasons.

“But we don’t have to,” Klopp added. “We have to find solutions during the season.

“Yes, you find sometimes the solution in the transfer market and we have done that. I don’t have to name the players, everybody knows.

“But otherwise you have to find the solutions on the training ground and that’s what we do now.”
