Man Utd could sign another centre-back as well as Harry Maguire – ‘an absolute no-brainer’

Maguire is Manchester United’s No 1 transfer target to improve the middle of their back line.

Leicester want £80million for the England international which would break the world-record transfer fee for a defender.

But Ogden claims United could also sign Toby Alderweireld from Tottenham.

Alderweireld has a release clause in his Spurs contract of £25m which is only active up until two weeks before the transfer window shuts on August 8.

Speaking on the Transfer Talk podcast, Ogden was asked what pother defenders Manchester United have looked at other than Maguire.

He said: “Well they looked at Matthijs de Ligt, rather ambitiously in thinking they could get him out of Ajax because they had a big queue ahead of them.

“PSG, Barcelona and Juventus, where it looks like he’s heading.

“De Ligt’s gone, Toby Alderweireld has got a £25m release clause at Tottenham.

“He would be a perfect fit for United. Yes he’s had his injury problems but for that sort of money you would think that he’s an absolute no-brainer.

“They could potentially do both, Maguire and Alderweireld.

“They certainly wouldn’t be overstocked with defenders if they had those two.

“Alderweireld is an obvious candidate but there aren’t many top-class centre-halves out there which is why United have got so many problems at the back.

“They’ve been trying for years to find decent centre-halves but they haven’t been able to do it.

“[Chris] Smalling and [Phil] Jones have been there for almost 10 years now.

“Marcos Rojo came in, been a disaster, Victor Lindelof, had a really poor start and is only just showing the form that United thought he was going to be capable of and Eric Bailly has been hot and cold.

“So they’ve tried to buy a centre-half and failed.

“So Maguire is the one that want because he’s proven in the Premier League and he’s proven at international level.”
