Algeria became part of the French Empire in 1830 and was considered an integral part of the French state and administered as such by Paris until 1962 when the Front de Liberation Nationale (FLN) won a war of independence.
Legally being part of France and not a colony, Algeria was technically a founding member of the European Community, the front runner to the European Union, but left after independence.
Algeria will play Nigeria in the tournament semi-final in Cairo on Sunday evening.
