Serena Williams and Simona Halep will meet in Saturday’s women’s singles final after overcoming Barbora Strycova and Elina Svitolina respectively on Thursday.
Williams, whose mixed doubles journey with Andy Murray ended on Wednesday, needed just two sets to defeay Johanna Konta’s quarter-finals conqueror Strycova.
Halep, meanwhile, coasted past Svitolina 6-1 6-3 as the 2018 French Open champion booked her place in the first Wimbledon final of her career.
Tennis fans must wait until Friday to see the likes of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in action but there were still doubles matches to enjoy on Thursday evening.
The last Brits left standing in the senior events at Wimbledon saw their hopes shattered on Thursday night.
Evan Hoyt and Eden Silva spectacularly blew their chances of making the semi-finals of the Mixed Doubles in bizarre fashion as they crashed 7-5, 7-6 to eighth seeds Ivan Dodig and Latisha Chan. But the British pair only had themselves to blame.
Welshman Hoyt and Londoner Silva actually led 4-1 in each set AND 4-0 in the final set tie break – and still managed to blow it.
The British pair, who at least lasted longer than Andy Murray and Serena Williams in the competition, started each set in blistering fashion on Thursday night – but then collapsed.
In the tie break they looked like they had rescued the situation as they led 4-0 and then 5-4 – but the experienced and athletic Dodig and partner Chan held their nerve.
The last three points slipped heartbreakingly away on Court 2 – as Chan’s volley at the net proved the final clincher.
