How Man Utd could line up with Bruno Fernandes and three other signings – no Paul Pogba

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is in the process of rebuilding the United squad after a shocking end to the 2018/19 campaign in which he oversaw just two wins from the final 13 games.

The Red Devils boss has already cleared the decks with Ander Herrera and Antonio Valencia departing while Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku could also move on this summer.

Meanwhile, Daniel James became Solskjaer’s first signing at the club with the Welsh winger arriving from Swansea in a deal worth £15million, potentially rising to £18m.

And this was immediately followed by the acquisition of Aaron Wan-Bissaka in a deal worth around £50m as United strengthened their defensive options.

If the Frenchman does leave Old Trafford, it will be even more imperative that Solskjaer signs an adequate replacement – although the expected bumper fee will surely help.

Meanwhile, United have pursued both Matthijs de Ligt and Kalidou Koulibaly this summer but have come closest to signing Leicester defender Harry Maguire.

United are understood to have had a £70m bid rejected for the England international with the Foxes holding out for £90m, but Solsjkaer has stated that he will not overpay for players.

Marcus Rashford is most likely to lead the line with Lukaku potentially off to Inter Milan while Anthony Martial will hope to re-establish his reputation after an inconsistent campaign last season.

The Frenchman could line up on the left wing if Solskjaer opts for a 4-2-3-1 formation which would allow Fernandes freedom in a No 10 role.

James will battle Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata for a spot on the right of the attacking unit while Scott McTominay appears to have emerged as first-choice in midfield.

The Scottish international is ahead of Fred and Andreas Pereira in the pecking order at Old Trafford while James Garner and Tahith Chong will hope to feature if Matic and Pogba move on.

Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw will be joined by Wan-Bissaka in a traditional back four ahead of David de Gea, while it remains to be seen if Chris Smalling, Phil Jones or Eric Bailly can compete with a new centre-back signing such as Maguire.

Manchester United predicted line-up in 2019/20

(4-2-3-1): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw; Matic, McTominay; James, Fernandes, Martial; Rashford
