Malia crash: Two Britons feared dead and one critically injured on Greek island of Crete

The Sun reported Crete’s ambulance service boss confirmed the crash and that a male and female passenger died instantly. A third passenger, another female, has been rushed to hospital. The other passenger in the rented Jeep that crashed into a parked motorbike is an 18-year-old who escaped without any serious injury.

The uninjured passenger is thought to have been wearing a seatbelt during the collision.

The Daily Star reported that the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) have confirmed the accident took place but did not confirm any death.

An FCO spokeswoman said: “We are supporting the families of three British people involved in a car accident in Crete, and are in contact with local authorities.”

According to the British Government, 3 million British nationals head to Greece every year.

The travel advice on the gov.uk website notes that in 2017 there were 739 road deaths in Greece, this equates to 6.9 for every 100,000 people.

This figure is two and a half times the figure in Britain, which is 2.8 per 100,000.

A 19-year-old British teenager Kieran Roche was killed in the coastal town last year after his quad bike flipped over.

The teenager was riding on the bike of a bike he rented with friend Charlie Bridger.

Retuning for the beach, they hit an object before swerving into two pedestrians, hitting one and clipping the other.

An inquest was told staff renting out the book had said only Mr Bridger had to wear a helmet as he was the driver.

The Government advice, however, says: “Quad bike riders must wear a full-face helmet (or non-full-face helmet plus goggles).

“Failure to wear a helmet might invalidate your travel insurance if you are involved in an accident and could lead to a €350 (£314) fine and confiscation of your licence.”

They are believed to have been travelling at around 30mph when the crash occurred.
