Game of Thrones: Melisandre star teases character could join prequel series

Game of Thrones viewers saw a number of characters die in the eighth season of the show.

Some were cut down in the heats of battle, while others were slain by the brutal and tyrannical Night King (played by Vladimir Furdik).

However one death stood out from the rest on the HBO fantasy hit – Melisandre (Carice van Houten).

After aiding in the fight against the undead by creating some flaming swords, and sparking some brutal wildfires, she took off her necklace and walked into the frozen wastelands to die.

As she died her youth and beauty withered away, revealing an old woman who had obviously been using some sort of spell to conceal her true age.

Fans of the franchise will know Game of Thrones is receiving a spin-off show set thousands of years before season one.

Because of this most people have been convinced no familiar faces will be present – but now Melisandre’s actor Carice has different ideas.

Speaking to Deadline, Carice explained: “Who knows. I guess you could see a very young Melisandre or something like that.”

However she admitted she hasn’t yet been asked to take the role, teasing instead that a different actor would take her place.

She added: “That could be fun. But not in the shape of me. No one has contacted me about it.

“There are so many great characters, but I personally would have loved to see more of Melisandre’s background.”

While nothing has been confirmed for the upcoming prequel series, all fans can do at the moment is wait for the show to come around.

But with a 2020 release date, that may not happen for some time.

Recently a star of the upcoming prequel – Naomi Watts – spoke about her apprehension over the show.

Speaking to AP Entertainment, Naomi explained she was intimidated the new one has “just come off the last series, where the world was blowing up over it”.

She added: “Everything was Game of Thrones related. All the advertising on TV, every article — everybody’s jumping on that bandwagon. So, it is scary.”

Naomi also spoke about hoping the new offering would bring across the fans from the previous show.

A surefire way for this to happen would be to include a character from the original series – such as Melisandre.

But would that be enough for viewers to latch on to the new show?

Game of Thrones is available on digital download now, while the untitled Game of Thrones Prequel is due to arrive 2020.
