Kodi add-on users have been dealt a piracy blow as the battle against illegal streams continues.
Research has suggested Kodi – which offers access to thousands of channels – is being used in more than five million UK homes.
Kodi software is not illegal, but unaffiliated developers can produce third-party add-ons that provides free access to pirated and illegal content.
These apps allow users to illegally stream premium content, like paid-for sports, movie channels and TV shows for free.
These illegal add-ons have been targeted by ISPs, government agencies, broadcasters and rights holders.
And as the piracy crackdown continues, those that use illegal Kodi add-ons have been dealt a blow.
Reddit has in the past been a popular place for internet pirates to turn to, with illegal streams to live sporting events posted there.
For those not wanting to watch the action on their computers or smartphones, Kodi add-ons can be used to display content on a TV instead.
However, Reddit reportedly has started to clamp down on subreddit pages that promote piracy.
As revealed in a post by Cord Cutters News, Reddit has shut down the NBAStreams subreddit page.
This offered access to illegal streams of live NBA games.
The news comes after the SoccerStreams subreddit page was also shutdown this year for piracy.
Similar subreddits such as CFBStreams and NFLStreams removed all links to piracy content to avoid similar bans.
Reddit has also reportedly sent copyright infringement notices to number of subreddits including r/Piracy.
According to Cord Cutters News, one notice said: “Redditors aren’t allowed to submit material that infringes on someone else’s copyrights”.
It added that admins must “remove any existing infringing content from (their) community, so Reddit doesn’t get new notices about past content.”
The Kodi news comes after a number of Kodi add-on repos suddenly disappeared.
Maverick TV, 13 Clowns and Overeasy were among those that reportedly closed following the shut down of Supremacy.
13 Clowns tweeted, “Thank you everyone for everything. Good bye,” and another simply said, “I’ve been Maverick. Thank you all. And Good Bye.”
Elsewhere the Kodi team recently warned its users about the dangers of installing certain add-ons.
The team behind the player, which is totally legal to download and use, alerted users of issues with malware in a post on its blog.
Explaining why users should be wary, Kodi said: “If a newer version (with a higher version number) of a given add-on is pushed to an installed repo, then the add-on can be updated regardless of which repo the addon originally came from.
“Hence, if a malicious programmer pushes a new version to an installed repo, then anyone who had the original version will get the poisoned version installed onto their device instead.”
