P20 Pro and Mate 20 Pro were Huawei’s flagship smartphones for 2018; the duo each place a heavy emphasis on their camera system, battery and design.
P20 Pro pioneered the triple camera system on a modern smartphone and still offers an incredibly capable photography experience.
Mate 20 Pro similarly offered a trio of lenses on its rear but replaced the P20 Pro’s dedicated monochrome sensor with an ultra wide-angle sensor, allowing Android fans to take very unique images.
While the hardware offered by both the P20 Pro and Mate 20 Pro is laudable, the software present on both is great, too.
P20 Pro launched running Android 8.1 Oreo but has since been updated to Google’s newer 9 Pie software.
Meanwhile, Huawei’s Mate 20 Pro came pre-installed with the American tech giant’s then latest and greatest operating system.
Both flagships run the Chinese OEM’s EMUI skin over Android; the software presents a number of unique features that are not offered in Google’s stock version.
These include the ability to take screen recordings, scrolling screenshots and more.
Huawei consistently updates its EMUI skin to bring enhancements for fans to enjoy.
The latest of which comes in the form of EMUI 9.1 that originally debuted on the firm’s new P30 Pro smartphone but is now coming to older hardware.
EMUI 9.1 brings a number of benefits over EMUI 9.0 that currently runs on the P20 Pro and Mate 20 Pro.
Chief of these is the fact the software’s read performance has been increased by as much as 20 percent, providing a notable speed boost for users.
Huawei’s new skin version also simplifies the settings menu for fans, meaning finding certain items is now much easier and requires less steps to be taken in order to do so.
GPU Turbo 3.0 is another aspect of EMUI 9.1 and aims to improve gaming performance by reducing screen touch response delays for a smoother experience.
Discussing the benefits of EMUI 9.1, Huawei said: “The latest EMUI 9.1 interface design consolidates the settings menu, removing multiple steps and hiding complexities for an effortless user experience. It also features new wallpapers and themes reflecting scenes of nature, and the app icons have been redesigned to be more realistic.
“GPU Turbo 3.0 improves the mobile gaming experience by supporting more games than ever before, whilst also reducing the screen touch response delay by 36 percent and optimising the system performance for uninterrupted play.

“Thanks to EMUI 9.1, a simple tap from the phone to a connected Huawei PC makes it possible to transfer pictures, videos and documents in seconds with HUAWEI Share OneHop. Users can also efficiently copy and paste documents between devices, as well as record their PC screen on their phone to capture a 60 second clip which is saved to the device for quick sharing.
“EMUI 9.1 includes features that promote a healthy digital lifestyle for users and their family members, including screen time statistics, sleep time management, parental control for supervising children’s smartphone use, and more. Plus, the improved digital wellbeing features can be used to manage usage time, apps, downloads, share location and trace devices.”
The Chinese tech giant has laid out a rollout schedule detailing when a litany of handsets such as the P20 Pro and Mate 20 Pro will be granted EMUI 9.1.

• P10, P10 Plus, PD Mate 9, Mate 9, Mate 20 Lite – End of August 2019
