Wimbledon 2019 – Can Someone Dethrone Djokovic

Wimbledon is the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament in the world.  It is being played at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London ever since 1877. The games are played on an outdoor court with a grass surface.

The 2019 Wimbledon tournament will traditionally be played from July 1st until the 14th. It will be the 133rd edition. The main events are the Men’s and Women’s Singles. Today, we will talk a little bit more about the Men’s favorites and whether someone can dethrone Serbian superstar Novak Djokovic who won the tournament in 2018.

Wimbledon 2019 Betting Odds

Wimbledon is a pretty popular event in the UK – to be honest, it’s one of the biggest annual sporting ones. That goes from a fan’s and punter’s point of view. Every year, millions place their bets on all the exciting matches and the final itself. Betting portals such as FreeBets UK offer an assortment of bonuses and other prizes for free which allow punters to maximize their profits. It’s no different this year, with dozens of bookies already providing enticing odds for the biggest favourites.

To no surprise, most are heavily favoring Novak Djokovic with odds of 13/8 to defend his title from last year. Despite 2019 being an up and down season for the Serbian, he is still expected to turn up for the big event and show why he is the number one ranked player in the world.

Right behind Novak, are the usual suspects – Federer with 4/1 and Nadal with 13/2. Way behind them is the German international Alexander Zverev at 17/1. Let’s dig a little deeper with those guys and see who is most likely to challenge Novak for the title.

Rafael Nadal

After beating Dominic Thiem for the French Open (also known as the Roland Garros) title, Nadal became a heavy favorite to win Wimbledon too. He announced that he won’t be participating in any other tournament prior to Wimbledon which means that he’s taking it extremely seriously, which is to be expected from the second best player in the world.

No other player in history has managed to win a Roland Garros-Wimbledon double apart from Nadal himself, who did so in 2010.

In the years that followed, however, Nadal seemed to have lost his step on the grass surface, largely because of his knee issues. He only managed to get a few wins in three seasons and failed to qualify in 2016. But over the last two years, he made the semi-final twice, including last year’s epic battle with Novak.

With a slightly struggling Djokovic, there is a good chance that Nadal can capitalize on this and win his first Wimbledon title since 2010.

Roger Federer

Good old, Roger. There can’t be an article made about a major tennis tournament without mentioning Roger Federer. The 20 time Grand Slam champion is a true legend of the game and perhaps Wimbledon 2019 could be his last opportunity to cement his legacy.

He is a player that gets the most love from the Wimbledon crowd, having been a dominant player there throughout his career, including 8 wins, including the one in 2017. Despite being 37 years old, the savvy veteran is still very competitive and well conditioned.

Alexander Zverev

The young German with a Russian background is one of the most talented young players in the world. He is currently ranked number 5 on the ATP list. However, he is still yet to prove himself in a Grand Slam tournament as he only ever made it to a quarter-final. He did so in the 2018 and this year’s French Open which is a step in the right direction. Perhaps Wimbledon 2019 can be his first major win in his young career.

We don’t really expect Zverev to actually win the title, as he is still a little bit behind the guys who we already mentioned. However, it is only a matter of time before that happens and this would be a great opportunity for him to break out and prove why he is considered the best young player.
