Trump shock: US President 're-engages supporters' by spending $1 million on birthday ads

Over a period of just five weeks, Trump has spent nearly half a million dollars advertising for his 73rd birthday which was on June 14, according to The New York Times. However, some of the Facebook adverts have incorrectly stated that the US President is turning 72. One advert in particular encouraged people to sign an online birthday card for Trump which read: “President Trump can’t wait to read your birthday messages.”

One ad purchased two days before Trump’s birthday read: “He’ll read the name of every supporter who signs his card when we present it to him on his birthday. Will he see your name?”

The card is also a clever ploy which will help his re-election campaign collect information about Trump’s current and potential supporters.

A Republican digital strategist Michael Duncan told The Times: “Digital list-building efforts like birthday cards are a great way to re-engage supporters, to refresh your email list and to grow a more personal relationship with your existing donor base.”

Since the start of the year, Trump has spent close to £5million on Facebook ads, according to Bully Pulpit.

American digital consultant and Trump’s campaign manager Brad Pascale previously called Facebook’s ad policy “a gift”.

Trump’s social media-focused 2016 campaign made almost 6 million adverts between the Republican National Convention and the general election.

Trump’s most recent Facebook spending in the past few months has been aimed at older Americans, especially women aged 55 or above.

It is believed the President is targeting the demographic to solidify his support base.

In 2016, 53% of voters aged 50 or older voted for Trump and played a more specific role in the states of Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, according to AARP.

From the female population, 53% of white women voted for Trump in 2016.

Although Trump outspent the Democrats at the very beginning of his campaign, Joe Biden has nearly spent $1.5million on online advertising between April 20 and May 11.

Trump spent nearly $970,000 (£770,000) in the same period.
