Google Maps update brings a handy improvement for Android users

Google Maps is easily the most utilised piece of navigation software in the world; the app is incredibly popular for its range of unique features such as Street View for instance that provides users with a detailed view of a location.

Maps is available on Android and iOS devices in addition to desktops and frequently receives updates that introduce new features.

The latest of which allows users to browse the menus of restaurants in a greater level of detail.

Now, when a user clicks on an outlet’s page they will instantly be able to see a list of popular dishes.

Images for each menu item will be accompanied by pictures that have been taken by Google Maps users.

Additionally, reviews for each item will also be available.

Google has declared the new functionality should allow users to make a more informed choice about what food or drinks they want before they order.

If a user is eating abroad and they are unable to read a menu, Google Maps can also now translate them for you.

Discussing the added functionality, the Mountain View company said: “The popular dishes feature is powered by a machine learning algorithm that matches dish names, provided by Google Maps users, with relevant photos and reviews.

“This creates a handy arrangement of a restaurant’s most-talked about meals right at your fingertips in Google Maps. In a country where you can’t read the language? Maps will also translate the dish reviews for you too.

“Simply pull up a restaurant on Google Maps to find its popular dishes in the overview tab. Feeling extra peckish? Dive into the menu tab to scroll through all the most talked-about meals. Tap on a popular dish to explore reviews and photos posted by other restaurant-goers.

“At the end of the day, popular dishes are made possible by the contributions from people around the world who want to help others using Google Maps.

“So if you want to pay it forward to the next diner, simply take a photo of your meal (before you’ve scarfed it down!) and we’ll ask you to add a dish name so others can know what’s good on the menu.”

The new feature for Maps should be available for Android devices across the globe right now.

Google has insisted iOS users can expect the new tool “in the coming months”.
