Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher picks out the one problem facing Jurgen Klopp vs Tottenham

That’s the view of Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher.

The Reds travel to the Spanish capital to face Premier League rivals Tottenham on Saturday (8pm) in their second successive Champions League final after losing out to Real Madrid 12 months ago.

With Roberto Firmino expected to be passed fit to face the north London side, Klopp will have a full first-team squad to pick from.

But that leaves him with some tough decisions to make – though he has the luxury of naming 12 substitutes thanks to a newly-introduced rule in the competition.

Liverpool’s back-line and front three virtually picks itself, barring any late fitness setbacks, but Klopp will be mulling over which combination of midfielders to pick from.

The German coach left Wijnaldum on the bench in his side’s semi-final second-leg, bringing the Dutchman on for an injured Andy Robertson at half-time as the midfielder scored twice in two minutes as Liverpool beat Barcelona 4-0, overturning a 3-0 first-leg deficit at Anfield.

And Carragher therefore expects Wijnaldum to be selected to start the final alongside captain Jordan Henderson and Fabinho with the versatile Milner having to watch from the bench.

“I think he’s only got one [selection headache],” Carragher told The Anfield Wrap.

“I think James Milner misses out, unfortunately. I love him, he’s been a brilliant signing since he came, plays in different positions at different times, does a brilliant job in midfield as well.

“I just think the fact with Wijnaldum, the whole season, would probably edge being our best midfielder.

“I don’t think he’s been brilliant all season, he’s had ups and downs in the second half of the season when he’s looked a little bit tired but coming on against Barcelona, scoring two goals, more often than not he’s been the first-choice midfield player.

“Henderson’s been out at different times, Fabinho had a tough first half of the season. I think it will be Henderson to the right, Fabinho and Wijnaldum.”

Carragher – a member of the last Liverpool team to win the Champions League in 2005 – expects 33-year-old veteran Milner to play an important role on the night even if he isn’t named in the starting eleven.

The player-turned-pundit added: “It’d have been very interesting if [Naby] Keita had have been fit. Very interesting.

“I’m not saying the manager hasn’t got a big decision but for me I’m pretty confident that will be the team.

“I think if Keita was in there, he would have had a big decision to make.

“One hundred per-cent he [Milner] will play some part in the final, there’s no doubt for me about that.

“He’ll come on whether we need to hang on to something or whether we still need a goal.

“Yes we’ve got the attacking players but you bring him on for his energy, his experience, he can take a penalty. He’ll still play a major part.”
