European elections ERUPT: Yellow vest protesters clash with police in Brussels

Video footage showed swarms of protestors attacking riot police in the Belgian capital, as the country voted at the EU elections.

Belgian police retailaited using tear gas and batons in front of protesters

Protestors can be seen protecting themselves with reinforced banners before police recover the items.

Police were deployed to Brussels Nord station, where protestors were chanting “everyone hates the police”.

A police helicopter was also seen hovering over the scuffle as Gilletes Jaunes protestors battled with riot police.

Banners in the area were hung, calling for the introduction of the RIC.

The RIC – or Citizens Initiative Referendum – would be a policy meaning any proposal garnering 700,000 signatures would trigger a national referedum to be held within a year.

A mock gallow was also spotted, adorned with yellow balloons with President Emmanuel Marcon’s name scrawled on them.

Yellow Vests protesters gathered in Brussels for the 28th consecutive weekend of rallies.

The Local predicted this weekend’s rally would see a greater number of demonstrators converge than usual.

Dogs “without muzzles” are also used by the Belgian police, as well as officers on horseback.

As well as the EU vote, Belgium is also holding domestic elections today.

It follows the so called Yellow Vests clashing with riot police in Paris and the northern city of Amiens on Saturday.

This is a breaking story. More to follow…
