Black Mirror season 5 spoilers: Miley Cyrus hints at 'outrageously dark' episode

Fans of Black Mirror don’t have to wait too much longer for the return of the series as Netflix have confirmed it will drop in just over a week and Miley Cyrus, who appears in the one of the episodes, has revealed what viewers can expect.

Miley will be starring in the episode titled Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too, which follows a lonely teenager trying to connect with her favourite pop star, Ashley O, played by Miley.

Speaking at Radio 1 Big Weekend, she hinted at a “dark” episode which has similarities to her own story in the music industry.

Talking about the episode, she described them as: “Outrageously out there and dark, just like the music industry.”

Despite the similarities with her own path to fame, she explained that the plot is definitely not based on her personal story.

Crediting her nearest and dearest, she remarked: “My family is what’s kept me the way that I am and kept me still loving music.”

However, her character Ashley’s family are not as supportive which could explain some of the dark twists and turns that have been predicted in the upcoming episode.

Before being approached by show creators Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones, Miley was already a fan of the series and didn’t need much persuading to jump on board.

Speaking to Grazia, Annabel said: “It turned out that she had heard of the show and not only, but she was a fan and the script really spoke to her.”

The streaming giants will release all three episodes of the new series at the same time for fans to stream online.

Despite the release of feature-length hit Bandersnatch, viewers have been waiting for a new series since the end of 2017.

Season five is slightly smaller than previous seasons and all six episodes of the fourth season were released on December 29 to stream on Netflix.

Alongside Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too, the other two episodes are titled Smithereens and Striking Vipers.

Sherlock star Andrew Scott will feature in the first episode Smithereens as a taxi driver who finds himself at the centre of the news everyday.

The final instalment, Striking Vipers, sees two characters who knew each other at high school reunite.

But their lives could be changed forever as a result of their rekindled relationship.

Speaking to Digital Spy, Charlie Brooker explained that Bandersnatch is behind the fifth season’s shorter run.

He revealed: “Originally, ‘Bandersnatch’ was part of season five.

“So, ‘Striking Vipers’ we actually shot before we started shooting ‘Bandersnatch’. ‘Smithereens’, a little bit of that overlapped with ‘Bandersnatch’.”

He later went on to say Bandersnatch was the “equivalent of doing a whole season in itself.”

Black Mirror season 5 arrives June 5 on Netflix.
