Rafael Nadal has won 11 French Open titles since turning professional in 2003, and has only ever lost to twice at Rolland Garros.
Only one player will be taking part in this year’s tournament that has beat Nadal at the Major – Novak Djokovic.
The Spaniard is looking to retain his favourite title for a second year in a row, but he doesn’t care about tags placed on him by the media.
“I don’t care if I’m the favourite,” Nadal told AFP.
“I care about feeling well and playing well.”
Nadal went on to name the six players that could claim victory, and his old rival Roger Federer is included.
“I appreciate that you [the media] see me like that, but Dominic Thiem, Novak, Federer, Stefanos Tsitsipas who has been playing well, Juan Martin del Potro, Kei Nishikori – all those that are the best in the world will be favourites.
“The only thing that worries me is being well and being competitive.
“The only favourite that matters is the one who has the cup at home in two weeks’ time.”
Nadal has had his fair share of injury worries throughout his career, and he insists that his ability to stay fit is his main probity.
“When you’re recovering from an injury it’s also difficult to recover mentally,” he said.
“I had not had that [full fitness] for a long time.”
Federer’s return to the French Open came as a shock to fans, and he has now outlined why he decided to make a comeback.
Federer told French TV channel Stade 2: “What made me decide to come back to Roland-Garros? In the end, it’s envy.
“I like slipping, cushioning, riding at odds, playing with angles and to see the fans I have not seen here.
“I hope to win a few matches to really savour this audience. I will give my best.”
