LeBron James: Lakers star already recruiting Kawhi Leonard and Jimmy Butler

The Lakers face one of the most important offseason in franchise history this summer.

After a frustrating campaign which saw controversy off the court steal many of the headlines, the Lakers are now desperately relying on bringing in a marquee free agent to team up with LeBron James.

The perceived dysfunction in the franchise though has been regarded as a big put off for prospective free agents.

Magic Johnson threw the Lakers front office, particularly Rob Pelinka, under the bus in an explosive interview on Monday, and some suggested he further hampered their chances in the offseason.

With players such as Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, Leonard and Butler all potentially available, the Lakers will be hoping they can convince at least one of them to join.

And ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reports James has already begun his recruitment pitch.

He states both Leonard and Butler have been contacted by the three-time NBA champion.

“From what I understand, [LeBron] has already begun the recruiting process,” he said on ESPN’s Pardon the Interruption.

“I’ve heard he has had contact with Kawhi Leonard.

“I’ve heard he’s had contact with Jimmy Butler.

“There’s no tampering enforcement by players.

“And while Magic Johnson – the guy who got in trouble for tampering before – LeBron is tamper-in-chief of the Lakers right now.

“I don’t know if texts, calls and dinner with LeBron is enough for the Lakers to overcome the hurdles they are going to have.

“I don’t think the Lakers can be choosy.

“If I’m honest, I think the Lakers really have to look at the trade market.”
