Celtic issued ‘wake-up call’ warning by Strachan as Rangers handed Alfredo Morelos advice

That’s the opinion of former Celtic manager Gordon Strachan.

The final Old Firm derby of the season earlier this month saw Rangers triumph 2-0 at Ibrox to claim two wins from two on home soil against the Hoops for the first time in seven years.

Rangers still ended the season nine points adrift of the Scottish Premiership champions, who claimed an eighth straight title, after defeat to Kilmarnock on the final day.

But Steven Gerrard’s season ended on a high aside from the loss at Rugby Park and while Celtic can claim a third successive domestic treble with the Scottish Cup on Saturday, there is uncertainty at Parkhead.

Neil Lennon is currently only caretaker manager after replacing Brendan Rodgers in February and there are question marks as to whether the Northern Irishman should be handed the position permanently or not for the second time in his career.

And Strachan – who won three titles, a Scottish Cup and two Scottish League Cups in four years as Celtic boss – thinks the Bhoys were handed a reminder by Rangers of the work ahead of them even despite the current advantage they hold over their Glasgow rivals.

But by contrast, the ex-Scotland manager thinks Rangers tactician Gerrard will be hugely encouraged heading into his second season at Ibrox even despite top goalscorer Morelos’ uncertain future.

The 30-goal Colombian recently declared he wants to play in a “much better, more competitive” league and the Light Blues would undoubtedly prefer to keep the 22-year-old – but Strachan says they should cash in if they receive a big offer.

He wrote in The Sunday Post, looking back on the Old Firm derby: “Steven Gerrard’s side produced some terrific football, full of pace, precision and positive intent.

“They did so too for the most part without top scorer Alfredo Morelos, who played only 11 minutes off the subs’ bench.

“Rangers play with more fluidity when he is not involved, and this was proof positive.

“If the club receive a big bid for the Colombian in the summer, they should take it and use part of the funds to strengthen their squad.

“Not that there is much remedial work to be done based on this display.

“As a combination, the midfield three of Steven Davis, Ryan Jack and Glen Kamara is greater than the sum of the parts.

“Kamara really caught the eye. For £50,000 from Dundee, he has to be the signing of the season, while Scott Arfield delivered another all-action display.

“Overall, it was a great advert for Gerrard’s efforts to convince potential summer signing targets they can come north and be part of a group which has a chance at ending Celtic’s bid to make it nine-in-a-row.

“The flip side is that this result will have served as a wake-up call to the Celtic board.

“They will now be all the more determined to ensure they have the right manager in charge, and to supply him with the funds required to ensure continued domestic dominance.”
