The British Foreign Secretary issued the stark warning in Brussels and at the European Union foreign affairs ministerial meeting this morning. He said: “We are very worried about risk of a conflict happening by accident with an escalation that is unintended really on either side…And so we’ll be sharing those concerns with my European counterparts, with Mike Pompeo. We had very good discussions with Mike Pompeo when he was in London last week, we are very worried about the risk of a conflict happening by accident and the risk of an escalation that is unintended on either side and ends with some kind of conflict.
“What we need is a period of calm, so that everyone understands what the other side is thinking and most of all to make sure we don’t put Iran back on the path to nuclearisation because if Iran becomes a nuclear power, neighbours are likely to want to become nuclear powers, this is already the most unstable region in the world.
“There is a real concern that escalation that is unintended could end up with a much more serious situation.”
