The Reds needed to beat Wolves and hope Brighton took points off defending champions Manchester City in order to win the title.

Liverpool did their bit with a comfortable 2-0 win at Anfield but saw their dreams dashed by Pep Guardiola’s men who easily saw off Brighton 4-1.

Sadio Mane was on target twice for Jurgen Klopp’s side, turning home Trent Alexander-Arnold’s deflected cross before heading home another of the full-back’s deliveries to make the game safe and earn a share of the Golden Boot spoils.

The results leave Liverpool a single point behind City at the end of the campaign, despite having lost just once all season.

Express Sport have rated how the Liverpool players performed against Wolves, but do you agree?

Liverpool player ratings vs Wolverhampton Wanderers – Premier League

GK: Alisson – 8

A couple of big stops from Diogo Jota kept his side ahead when the title was still up for grabs.

The Brazilian has been outstanding for Liverpool this season and finished on a high.

RB: Trent Alexander-Arnold – 7

Bombed up and down the right wing all afternoon, getting a bit of luck with his cross for the opener before laying another ball on a plate for Mane.

Kept on his toes in defence but stood up to the challenge well.

CB: Joel Matip – 6

Kept a close eye on Jota for the most part and has really grown as a player this season, proving a reliable performer again and again.

CB: Virgil van Dijk – 6

Wolves opted to target Matoip instead of Van Dijk, so there was plenty of time for the Dutchman to amble forward at leisure.

Hit the bar late on and never looked in trouble at the back.

LB: Andrew Robertson – 7

Almost scored with an excellent long-range drive and did his best to give the Reds width.

Faded out of the game as he struggled with the injury carried over from midweek, but was still his regular impressive self.

CM: Fabinho – 6

Ate up the ground in another energetic performance in front of the back four, getting through heaps of defensive work for his side.

Less expansive in possession but kept things simple.

CM: Jordan Henderson – 7

Drove his side on in the opening half with plenty of strong carries and some important challenges.

Always looking for work and kept plugging away until the final whistle.

CM: Georginio Wijnaldum – 6

Like Fabinho, preferred to play sensibly as opposed to taking risks against a dangerous Wolves outfit but put in a shift when out of possession.

RAM: Mohamed Salah – 6

Can’t be accused of lacking effort but never had a clear sight of goal, although he went close with one volley in the first half.

Drew defenders to him with his pace and trickery, creating space for others.

LAM: Sadio Mane – 8

In the right place help himself to two important goals, drawing level with Mohamed Salah on 22 strikes for the season.

His movement was excellent and gave Liverpool a spark that was needed.

ST: Divock Origi – 6

Denied by a great block from Connor Coady just before his substitution, but that was as good as it got for the Belgian as he struggled to find space.
