Mate 20 Pro update – Huge changes could be coming to Huawei's flagship series

Huawei Mate 20 Pro was unwrapped in October last year and was critically acclaimed by Express.co.uk for its commendable array of features.

In fact, we went so far as to award the hardware our coveted phone of the year award for 2018.

Mate 20 Pro was most laudable for its triple-camera system, amazing battery life and reliable facial unlocking that worked stupendously well.

The Mate series is one of Huawei’s two flagship product ranges that are released towards the start and end of each year respectively.

The Chinese tech powerhouse has already unleashed its P30 Pro handset this year, meaning all eyes, rumours and speculation are now locked firmly on its next Mate smartphone.

Not much has previously been outed about the presumably titled Huawei Mate 30 Pro, but it appears that may have just changed.

A new report has recently emerged by way of Chinese media that has made a number of substantial claims about the Mate 30 Pro.

First and foremost, the outlet declared the hardware will be powered by a new processor in the form of Huawei’s own Kirin 985.

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro and P30 Pro are dually powered by the OEM’s Kirin 980 chipset.

While the Kirin 985 was stated to still be a 7-nanometre processor, it is expected a speed and efficiency upgrade over last year’s 980 would be presented.

Most notably, it was declared the Mate 30 Pro would be capable of delivering 5G networks thanks to its housed Balong 5000 modem.

However, it was stated the phone would also come in a 4G variant.

In terms of display, the Mate 30 Pro was said to boast a 6.71-inch screen produced by screen maker BOE.

If true, this would represent a sizeable increase over the Mate 20 Pro that has a 6.39-inch panel.

Chinese media has iterated the Mate 30 Pro’s screen will sport a curve on all four of its sides – it was also said to be unclear how or if the phone will tackle 3D facial recognition.

But, it was noted a fingerprint sensor will exist underneath the display.

Where cameras are concerned, the Mate 30 Pro was emphasised to flaunt a quad-camera system housed in a similar square module to its predecessor.

It was noted the phone will have a time-of-flight (TOF) sensor but not a periscope zoom lens as seen on the P30 Pro.

Finally, the battery capacity of the Mate 30 Pro was said to be 4,200mAh, the same as its predecessor.

Plus, it was said the phone will support Huawei’s 55W fast wired charging that has already been confirmed to feature on its foldable handset, the Mate X.

While the new report surrounding Huawei’s next Mate device will surely prove to be incredibly tantalising for Android fans, it is worth noting the accuracy of such claims has not been confirmed by Huawei directly.
