Doctor Who season 12 spoilers: Former star to take on role of Time Lord in NEW adventure

Captain Jack Harkness (played by John Barrowman) was introduced to the world of Doctor Who back in 2005 when the ninth incarnation of the Time Lord, then portrayed by Christopher Eccleston, 55, met the handsome time traveller.

Actor John Barrowman, 52, has reprised the role several times over the years but has yet to meet the latest and first female incarnation of the Doctor (Jodie Whittaker).

However, John will be somewhat replacing Jodie Whittaker, 36, in a new series of adventures created for the latest edition of the Big Finish audio boxset.

Following on from The Lives of Captain Jack: Volume One, Volume Two will see the time agent descend into the sci-fi world in three new episodes of the popular audio series based on the hit BBC drama.

In the first story, Jack will be taking over the role of the Time Lord from the sixth Doctor (Colin Baker) as the mysterious seventh incarnation of the Doctor when the Gallifreyan dies in his arms.

Former star Colin Baker, 75, will also be reprising the role in the new series as Jack travels through time carrying on with the Time Lord’s work in the iconic multi-coloured, multi-patterned trench coat.

The second story, What Have I Done, will see Jack thrown back in time to World War I, with the character battling against time to save the life of an injured solider in the trenches.

Whereas in episode three, another former character will be making a comeback as actress Lachele Carl, 59, will be reprising the role of American news reporter Trinity Wells who made cameo appearances throughout the revived sci-fi series to report on the strange alien encounters.

Based around the life of the news anchor, the third instalment will see Jack come face-to-face with Trinity as after years of reporting on the alien invasions of Earth, Wells begins to stop believing in the unknown.

Will Jack be able to change her mind? Speaking of the casting of Jack in the iconic role of the Doctor, writer of the third episode James Goss told Digital Spy: “As we had such a great time doing the first volume it seemed a lovely idea to do another.”

James continued: “Amazingly, John managed to find time for us *and* capture a nation’s heart in the jungle.

“Hearing him face off against Colin Baker’s Doctor is the joy we’ve all been waiting for,” the writer added, referencing Captain Jack taking on the iconic role.

Viewers will be able to hear the adventures from Big Finish play out later this year when the series becomes available to download in June.

However, Jack may not be the only former character making an unexpected comeback to the Whoniverse as Bill Potts star Pearl Mackie, 31, has teased a return to the sci-fi series.

Bill travelled with the 12th Doctor (Peter Capaldi) for one season, before being turned into an avatar to be reunited with her lover, Heather (Stephanie Hyam).

Speaking to Radio Times about the possibility of a return in the future, Pearl said: “I think I need more time, to be honest. I still feel quite close to Bill.

“I need to miss her before I want to play her again, you know? I think I need to [do that] and find a way to add to her story before wanting to go back and play her again.”

Speaking of her character being a LGBTQ+ representative in the show, Pearl explained: “This has happened a few times subsequently, but I’ll always remember when a girl came up to me to say that she identified with Bill so much that it enabled her to come out to her family and without me she wouldn’t have been able to do that.”

For now, the 13th Doctor will be travelling through space and time with her trio of companions; Ryan Sinclair (Tosin Cole) Yas Khan (Mandip Gill) and Graham O’Brien (Bradley Walsh).

Former star Jenna Coleman, 33, who played companion Clara Oswald from 2012 to 2015, recently revealed her favourite incarnation of the Time Lord.

Doctor Who season 12 will air on BBC One in 2020.
