eBay: ‘Very rare’ Peter Rabbit 50p coin selling for £1290 – but you must watch out

Beatrix Potter commemorative coins were first released in 2016 and there been new ones released each year since.  For those hoping to get one of their own, eBay can be a good place to start as there are plenty on offer.  However, some of these are put on sale at a highly marked up price and bidders should watch out.  A Beatrix Potter Tale of Peter Rabbit coin was recently selling for over £1000 on eBay, but potential bidders should be careful.

The eBay user, “dove01r” uploaded the 50 pence piece onto eBay with the Buy It Now price of £1,290.

The coin is described as the Tale of Peter Rabbit 50p from 2017, and the seller revealed it is circulated and “very rare”.

Beatrix Potter coins were first released in 2016 to mark the 150th anniversary of the author’s birth.

Coins from the collection were designed by Emma Noble, and the one on offer is from the second batch of the coins released.

For those hoping to get their hands on the coin, they will be treated to free economy delivery, which will send the coin by 2nd class mail.

Although the coin is on sale for a whopping sum of money, potential buyers must watch out as it might be worth much less.

According to the website, Change Checker, the coin has a mintage of 19,300,000, which means that is how many of the coins were originally released.

It has also been ranked as one on the scarcity index, which means it is common, and not rare as the seller would suggest.

What’s more, experts at the publication Spend It? Save It? What should you do?, explained the Tale of Peter Rabbit 50p is actually worth around £4.

When it was released, buyers could get their hands on the coin for just £10 from the Royal Mint, although they have now sold out.
