NFL Draft 2019: Giants pick Daniel Jones, Dwyane Haskins LAUGHS and fans are shocked

Giants general manager Dave Gettleman could have taken Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins or edge rusher Josh Allen, as both were still on the board, but instead took Jones.

Coming into the 2019 NFL Draft New York were in the market for a quarterback as 38-year-old Eli Manning is entering the twilight years of his career.

Earlier in the week, Gettleman said he wouldn’t “force a pick”, but Giants fans are not happy with the organisation’s choice and Haskins was seen laughing as it was announced.

The camera was focused on Haskins, who was looking at his phone while the Giants pick came through, and he was caught laughing and shrugging as their selection was announced.

Most people had Jones as the third-ranked quarterback in the draft but the Giants clearly didn’t want to wait to get their man.

Boos were even heard around the MetLife Stadium as fans back in New York waited to hear the team’s draft pick.

One fan said summed up the mindset of many Giants supporters on Twitter, he said: “Worst pick possible.”

Another questioned why they didn’t take Josh Allen as Jones would have likely been available with the Giants’ No 17 overall pick.

“Why did we pass on Josh Allen,” they said.

Another said: “I would’ve rather taken a kicker.”

One fan was so angry they questioned why they are supporting the Giants.

“Can’t support a team that stabs their fans in the back over and over again with the owner sitting and watching it happen.”

As for Jones, the 6,”5 quarterback so far has played 36 games, in which he completed 764 of 1,275 passes for 8,201 yards, while amassing 52 touchdowns and 29 interceptions.

Jones is the first player from Duke to be taken in the first round since 1987.

He was also named MVP of the Senior Bowl after passing 115 yards and one touchdown while rushing for another.

The Giants have now drafted the past three Senior Bowl MVPs, with the others being quarterbacks Kyle Lauletta and Davis Webb.
