New York streets SHUT DOWN as bomb squad investigates suspicious package on Broadway

The Emergency Service Unit (ESU) were called onto assist, and they later deemed the package to be safe. Footage emerged on Twitter of the area being shut off. The streets affected are Broadway and Liberty Street in Manhattan’s Financial District.

Police reportedly activated a Level 1 Mobilisation, assigning additional units to the scene to help evacuate pedestrians and traffic.

Around half an hour later, after the package was deemed safe, the mobilisation was terminated.

It is believed that the package was at 140 Broadway.

Twitter users in the area described being told to take an alternate route as the NYPD investigated.

This is not the first time a bomb scare has rocked New York City.

Last year, the Time Warner Building where CNN’s offices are, was evacuated after a suspicious package was discovered on the third floor.

An NYPD spokesperson said at the time: “As a precaution, the NYPD is currently evaluating a pair of unattended packaged at the Time Warner Centre Mall, Columbus Circle in Manhattan.”

They later deemed the package safe with no hazardous material found.

Bomb scares have also hit the UK recently.

The Wimbledon area was evacuated early this month after a suspicious package was found on Merton Hall Road Bride.

Last month, police cordoned off a street in Holborn, central London, to investigate a “suspect package”

Also in march, police investigated reports of a suspicious package being placed outside a mosque in London.
