Coronation Street actress Katie McGlynn, 25, said she got a smear test upon learning the statistics about women who have suffered from cervical cancer while pregnancy. According to Cancer Research UK, there is an average of 854 deaths a year from cervical cancer. Katie also flagged there are two women a day who are diagnosed with the disease “in or around pregnancy”. Admitting she feared her own health when researching the storyline, she told OK! Magazine: “When we started the storyline, I checked I’d had a smear done and then I was worrying about it.
“It makes you realise you’re not invincible.”
On the cobbles, Sinead was diagnosed with cervical cancer while pregnant with her son Bertie, who she shares with husband Daniel Osbourne (played by Rob Mallard).
She recently finished her treatment to combat the disease and is waiting to hear her results.
As it stands in the UK, cervical cancer screenings are available to women aged 25 to 64.
Katie previously admitted she did not agree with the age limit, insisting it should be lowered.
She told The Sun: “I don’t agree with how women have got to wait ’til 25 to have a smear test personally. I think it’s absolutely ridiculous.
“It does happen to young people and it’s a very serious illness.”
The actress also reflected on the importance of her storyline and raising awareness about women getting tested.
She added to the publication: “There’s so many girls I’ve spoken to who don’t go for smear tests, so many women that don’t go for their smears.
“I just think it’s really important to highlight what these women have to go through.”
Last month, Katie hinted at the outcome of the storyline, telling the Daily Star: “I’m going to be here until next year.
“It’s a long-running story. If I get to stay it will be amazing because Sinead is a great character.”
Earlier this month, Katie took to Twitter to urge her 79,000 Twitter followers to support Mummy’s Star, a charity supporting women and families diagnosed with cancer during pregnancy or within 12 months of a birth.
Alongside her on-screen husband, the pair will run the 10k Great Manchester Run to raise money the charity next month.
She commented: “After the @Great_Run last year, I vowed never to do it again coz of how hot it is.(sic)
“But me & @Rob_Mallard are taking part in aid of @MummysStar It is something we are truly passionate about!
“Please support us, anything big or small is much appreciated.”
