Boxing news: Golovkin responds to Canelo, Crawford’s Spence Jr update, Anthony Joshua

Golovkin responds to Canelo

Gennady Golovkin insists he wants a trilogy fight with Canelo Alvarez regardless of whether or not titles are on the line.

The Kazakhstani fighter lost his WBC, WBA and IBO middleweight titles to the Mexican last year after a close majority decision following a split draw in their first fight in 2017.

Canelo puts his belts on the line as he looks to unify the division on May 4 in Las Vegas when he faces IBF belt-holder Danny Jacobs in a blockbuster showdown.

Alvarez has claimed that he would only fight Golovkin again if his rival can capture a world title, which would require him to face Jacobs – if he beats Canelo – or WBO champion Demetrius Andrade.

Golovkin, meanwhile, followed in Canelo’s footsteps by signing with streaming service DAZN, with the intention of securing a trilogy fight in the future, and believes the third fight has to happen regardless of what is on the line.

The 37-year-old said: “I think Canelo is not correct to say that. We have to see what’s going to happen. I’m hoping to fight him, title or not.”

Crawford’s Spence Jr update

Terence Crawford insists the only way he will face welterweight rival Errol Spence Jr. is if Bob Arum and Al Haymon can put their long-running feud to the side.

The Nebraska native, who holds the division’s WBO title, improved his record to 35-0 by stopping Amir Khan in the sixth round in New York last weekend and that sets up the possibility of a 147lbs clash with 25-0 IBF champ Spence Jr.

But Crawford’s promoter Arum said after his win over Khan: “We want the fight and Terence wants the fight. We are not standing in the way of this fight and we are doing everything we can to get it done. Haymon won’t even talk about it.”

And Crawford insists Spence’s team will have to compromise if a deal is to be made.

He told TMZ Sports: “I don’t know [how many times I have to call Spence out to get a fight done].

“I believe everybody has to be adults about the situation and come together as one and then we can get the fight to go on.

“If everybody don’t come together and agree to the terms that everybody feels need be, then the fight’s not going to happen. Simple.”

Anthony Joshua announcement

Anthony Joshua insists an announcement on his next opponent is imminent after Jarrell Miller was pulled from their New York bill.

The unbeaten British heavyweight’s first Stateside fight had him down to face Miller at Madison Square Garden on June 1 to defend his WBA, IBF and WBO belts.

But Miller has been denied a boxing licence after he failed three drugs tests and Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn is currently lining up an alternative to save the day.

Joshua told his YouTube channel: “When Eddie called me and he broke the news to me [about Miller], these things happen in sport, so I don’t get in my feelings about it, but what I did say is ‘whoever it is, I’m down to ride’.

“He’s [Hearn] doing the negotiations, he’s having the conversations. Hopefully it’ll be in the next 48 hours or 72 hours we’ll have an update.

“I keep my head down and try to stay out of trouble, that’s the best thing I can do, and deliver in the ring. June 1, MSG, it’s still going down. The landlord will still come and collect his rent.”
